In 2019, I followed facebook to watch an amazing guy walk across Australia, raising awareness for the prevention of suicide. As Dean made his way he filmed, photographed and posted every day of his arduous journey. People he met along the way wrote names on his flag and Dean's stories of amazing encounters and thank you messages to strangers for random acts of kindness were spellbinding. Word spread and as he walked through towns, he was interviewed for radio, newspaper and TV.
Then suddenly his walking accelerated as the news of Covid-19 broke, he was in a race to get to Sydney. Deans story vividly captured on Facebook and YouTube attracted a huge following, devotees started posting messages of support as Dean wrote of his frustration, aches, pain and fatigue. His story was now riveting!! Finally as the country went into lock-down Dean reached Sydney airport, handed his cart to strangers for safe keeping and flew home to the west coast in hours, landing just before the state border closed, after months of walking.
Dean's gift was sharing "The Walk for Hope” it touched all who followed him, and it was my inspiration to write “I choose to live” My gift to you, a little reminder to cherish hope, be strong and share our life journey's, because we are all more than just OK; and Dean you are amazing!!
